J Crew Sweeping Ruffles Shirt

Show of hands...how many people had their J Crew Sweeping Ruffles Shirt (#22852, $98, and I have no idea why it's still full price) on back order?  And waited and waited?  Only to be utterly disappointed when they got it?  According to my SA, a LOT of these have been returned to the store in the past week or so, so I'm guessing you all feel the same way as I do about it.

Here's the online pic...How cute.  The floaty ruffles....love it.

And here's the reality.

What can I say?

Let's see...

hahahahahahahahaha

and

hahahahahahahahaha

and let's not forget.....

hahahahahahahahaha

Ok, seriously.  The full scoop.  Maybe it's just awful on me because I really don't have much in the way of curves (drewablank and I were talking about it earlier this week so I hope hers worked when it arrived).  And maybe it loses something when it's been folded flat in a package as opposed to being steamed into floaty loveliness in store.  I got a Medium.

The good:  It fit fine in the shoulders (thank you, J Crew!)  I really liked the length.  And I still like my new hair cut (more on that in an upcoming post).

The bad: all those flaps of fabric hanging off the shirt.  I felt like a laundry line.  Seriously.  It's wash day, woo hoo!  A hot mess on me.  And I try not to overuse that term, but oh, it seriously applied here.  And it was MUCH more sheer than the online pic would lead you to believe.  And, for us lazybones, who wants to iron this sucker?  "Not it."

Bottom line: Not even on sale, honey.  Or maybe my Polyvore will tell you how I really feel....

ps - props to Chris of A Little "Crew"zy, who called this as a major miss back in January. You were right, Chris, but at least I didn't pay for shipping!

Wow - that looks nothing like it does in the product photo! And so sheer and shiny looking. Ugh ugh. Thank you for the funny review.

Oh my, not ruffly at all! And sheer?? J Crew, what were you thinking? Sorry Heidi, it's not you, it's the crew!

haha, you're funny. I like your review - I was always wondering about that shirt. You look good, but that shirt just looks blaaa!

Heidi, you're one of my go-to gals for the real scoop on questionable items. Thanks, saves me a second think.

I returned mine too after trying the S and XS, it looked horrible on me. I had FS and 20% off, still not worth it. Big disappointment, $98.00 disaster, what were they thinking with this one.

I ordered and then cancelled before the 60 minutes were up for the ironing reason. I kept thinking about how I was going to make and keep it all floaty after washing. One thing I hate is receiving a sheer white shirt or tee or tank when the picture clearly shows it as opaque.

Thanks for the review and I LOVE your hair!!

I received mine last week and sent it back the next day...absolutely horrible, IMO. I honestly felt as if I had been TP'd by some of the HS seniors about to graduate...not a good look at all. To top it off, since it had been a waitlist item and I returned through the mail, they have issued me a gift card as my refund since it's been over 60 days since I first ordered it. It will be reversed of course, and then refunded to my CC, but still...can they not check the actual date it was billed on before issuing the refund?

Btw, your hair looks FAB! :)

Your review made me laugh, and I agree with you I do not like the top.

Wow, Heidi, CUTE hair! And thanks for saving me from lusting after that shirt. Really liked the way it looked online but when my PS gave me the measurements, thought it might be a loose dress on me. But still I wondered ... until now ;)

Your hair looks cute. The sweeping ruffles is a disappointment. I *did* like the fabric on it. They messed up the ruffles as you stated. I partially blame myself. I should have known from that funky pose the model struck that this had fit issues.

No, the words have escaped me. This is a first.

Love your hair, though. :)

heidi - I got mine this week too and you are so right! It is a hot mess, and I similarly laughed when I tried it on. Also - the sleeves were way short!!!!

Maybe it would have been better if the ruffles were made of the same fabric of the shirt?

Back it goes...

did not like all the ruffles on the model....looks nothing like the model's shirt IRL, and you are right...the fit is OK but the design is odd. Did they use a much more sheer silk in the actual item?

First, the good- your hair looks wonderful! The bad, the shirt. Yeah, they missed the mark on that one. It had cute potential but it does look a mess. That's disappointing.

Wow, talk about a case of 'IRL item looks nothing like the picture'! FFM, your TP comment had me rolling...so true!

It will be interesting to see if a bunch of these will pop up in the sale section.

Funny review, Heidi. Seriously...that can't be the same shirt they advertised.

Can't wait to read about your new hair.

LOL!!!! It somehow makes me think of the puffy shirt from Seinfeld.

Glad you all enjoyed it!!

Lady Cardigan - yes, it was shiny..weirdly so...the description says "crisp cotton" not "cotton sateen".

Suzy - yeah - WAY sheer - normally you can tell from the online pics if something is sheer or not, but not this time. It bugs me when it is different that I expected.

Chasing Davies - blaaa or blegh? either applies, hehehe.

cdp - happy to help!

Susan - disaster is right.

Kathy - smart lady, cancelling in that 60 minutes!!

FFM - TP'ed is right!! Perfect description!!! (and ugh, can't believe you have to go through the hassle of getting the credit to your card - ridiculous!)

casual-crew - glad you enjoyed it!

tiffany rose - loose dress - yes, it could qualify as that.

gigofca - it always goes back to the funky model pose, doesn't it?? I should know by now...

dinagideon - you speechless???

kater - yep, just not a good shirt at all...

C - no idea where the disconnect is between the online pic and what I got. It is cotton - but the description says "crisp cotton shirt", not shiny, sheer cotton.

Pamela - amen to that.

silver-Lining - I agree, love the TP comment!! It will be interesting to see where they end up - even though my SA reported major returns, they didn't have them out - maybe they are sending them back to distribution so they can be sent out to the other suckers...

Cleo - I know...major photoshopping?

La Belette Rouge - yep, I felt a LOT like Jerry Seinfeld when I put it on.

OMG! I wanted this so when it first appeared, but I didn't want to wait 6 months to get it! The more I looked at it online though, the more it concerned me as a potential "hot mess"! The biggest giveaway was the way the model posed with her elbow pushing the bulk of the shirt back. The sheerness of it is definetly a surprise as it doesn't appear that way in JC's pics!
Way cute haircut! ;)

Julie - I'm glad you were smart enough to stay away!! Like gigi said - the funky model pose is always a giveaway for wonky fit.
