Heidi's Beauty Bag - Stinky Pits

What a post title, I know. But let's talk shaving, deodorant, and all that fun stuff. (I know, again, like the beach post, I wait until the end of summer - what can I say, I was "testing.")

First up, the shaving issue. Hands down, my absolute favorite shaving cream is Aveeno Positively Smooth Shave Gel. It's supposed to help you shave "less often." I discovered this when I pregnant with M, so that would be...10 years ago. I swear this works. You know how when you are pregnant, all those hormones are raging and the hair on your head gets thicker? Well, I think it all does, and with this shave cream, I needed to shave my legs less often. I will admit that I have strayed to others over the years, but I always come back to this one. Love love love.

After shaving the legs, you need some serious moisture, right? Well, you do anyway, but *especially* after shaving. Back when I first discovered the Aveeno shave cream, I used to use with their Positively Smooth lotion - which I thought worked quite well. But I don't recall seeing that in a while on my usual circuit, and last summer, I started using Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen. Not for active wear, but great for your everyday nominal exposure. I think it does a great job of hydrating - it may take a half minute longer to soak in, but you get the sun protection. And you all know how I am about loving my sunscreen.

Given how much I love love love my Aveeno shave minimizing, so when I saw the ads this summer for the new Dove antiperspirant - "Visibly Smooth", I was psyched. So in spite of my utter devotion to my current antiperspirant (more on that below), I ran right out to get some. Outcome? Meh, I give it a C. I gave it a true test and wore it for about 6 weeks, but I saw no difference. It was ok as an antiperspirant, but not great. Bummer!!! So as soon as my trial was over, I went running back to my all-time fave antiperspirant....

Secret Clinical Strength Antiperspirant Deodorant. I swear this stuff is magic! (I like the Light & Fresh scent)It's the first product I have ever found that truly effectively stopped perspiration and stinkiness on me. Love love love love. Wow, I gave it 1 more "love" than the Aveeno shave cream. But seriously folks, it is gold. The only teensy drawback is that you do have to be careful about the dark sleeveless top/white mark thing - but you know, antiperspirant really functions better if you apply at night before you go to bed. Your body heat helps it really sink in and be more effective the next day, even after you shower. I always forget that, but am trying to remember. Maybe I need to set it next to my toothbrush. When I need to reapply and will be wearing a dark top, I just try to apply sparingly and make sure it is very dry before dressing.

Wishing you smooth legs and fresh scents...

It's such a funny title and topic, but so key! Thanks for posting this! I personally have fallen head over heels for the Skintimate cream shave. I used the Gillette shave gel for years (can't remember the name but it's the girl's version) but have now been thoroughly converted to the cream shave. It's super smoothing and smells good too.

One wonderful thing about fall and cooler weather? Less shaving and less sweating!

Funny, I use the same antiperspirant and I have the same issues with the white marks on dark tops and tees. I didn't know about applying it before going to bed, I must try that! My personal "secret" are the "Gal Pal Garment Deodorant Removers", which are basically spongy pads that you wipe on the fabric to rub off the deodorant in 2 sec. It seems incredible but they really work (in case you are interested I bought them at the container store)!

I swear by the Aveeno shave cream as well! I hated the Dove antiperspirant. It just doesn't cut it for me when it's 100 outside. I am going to have to try your lotion pick. I have the Khiels wit SPF but it's a bit to thick for me. Love reading about your picks!

You should give the Dove "clinical" version a try. I think it's the best of both worlds! Great sweat protection AND soothing! It's my favorite :)

haha love the title. I'm a fan of Kiehl's superdeodorant. it has orange something or the other and works great!

I'm a Secret fan, too, but haven't tried the Clinical strength. When I have a big event coming up, whether it be personal or work related, I use Certain Dri (OTC from Walgreen). You apply that at night I swear you don't won't sweat for 2 days! I of course still wear my regular deodorant, but the Certain Dri give me the extra confidence I will stay dry and prevents any potential embarrassing underarm stains!

I had no idea about putting deoderant on the night before...I will have to start doing that! Thanks for the tip!

I've been using Certain Dri for years and it works great! Secret Clinical didn't work for me, sadly. I use Certain Dri every other night and use a Tom's of Maine deo every morning.

For shaving, I use L'Occitane's Almond Shower Oil. It's pricey but a bottle lasts me at least a year, if not more than that.

Oooh, that title! Love it! LOL! :D

You are always such a source for awesome beauty/health advice, Heidi. And this post is no different! I have recently been using Intuition by Schick (with the built-in shaving but am not fully satsified). Any tips or recommendations on good razors?

Love the title Heidi...too cute! Thanks for all the product reviews! I'm a Secret gal (in the Powder Fresh scent) and don't need to go *clinical*, but I do appreciate the post in case I ever need to. ;) Have a great afternoon! :)

Oh, you ladies all need to try Avon's Feelin' Fresh Anti/deo. It has an active ingredient not found in store brands and the price is cheap! (on sale it is 99 cents) There are reviews to read too. It really works. You don't need an avon lady. Just go online and order it NOW! You won't regret it. Lots of free codes for shipping at various sites too. I prefer the rollon but there is a stick.

Like Heather, I use Certain Dri every other night and Tom's of Maine deodorant in the AM. Together, I have no sweat or smell! A couple of years ago, I actually got botox in my armpits (yes, really!) after hearing that it completely stops sweat. It worked great, but I didn't have a really bad problem to begin with. It lasted a few months.

I am so impressed Heidi that you use shaving cream! I grab a bar of soap in the shower and toss my foot against the shower wall. I was thinking the other day..."well, I can still do this at 43...but might want a new set up say 20 years down the line"...thanks for another informative post.

Heidi, what a post! I enjoyed every bit of it. I remember posting something months ago asking for help. I have also found the secret clinical strength to be the best so far. Like you, I love, love, love, love, love, love it! hahaha I have to say that the one I use is the waterproof all day fresh scent. I think its new Ive used it for about a month now and its absolutely wonderful. I do let it dry first before wearing my blacks and dark colored clothes but I love the effect and the scent. =) thanks for the post!

I use Certain Dri the nite before special occasions and am a big fan. Also a fan of the Aveeno shaving creme. I didn't know about Secret Clinical. Thanks for all the good info.

Hope you're well.

Wow - such great input from everyone! (this is what I love about blogging)

CertainDri seems to be quite the favorite, but lots of suggestions as well.

Drewablank - so sad, but razors are one area where I am sadly ignorant. I am so bad about replacing mine on a regular basis. I just grab whatever looks good. I couldn't even tell you what I am using now. Not even sure of the color.

Any good razor suggestions from anyone?
