ups delivery (in small letters since it wasn't big)

Ok, it was a small JC delivery - 2 sale items, plus a FP dress that I never got to trying on at the Tysons event, so I was above teh $150 for free shipping. Seriously, J Crew, why do you make us play these games? At Chicos, once you have spent above $500 at the store/online (Passport member), you get FS - period. At LL Bean, you get FS and free monogramming with the LL Bean Visa (thanks, Mom, for letting me use your card to order from there).

So...I have realized that I need a good standard white shirt. My other one, from ATL a few years ago is a bit too....stylized. I need a very basic, simple (you know, plain) one. And they were on sale - Slim stretch shirt (#87699, orig $59.50, sale $49.50 - currently $39.99 - so I guess I need to go argue that one. Will a B&M give me the credit, or do I need to call CS?) And the Cafe Capris are still on sale (#10492, orig $79.50, curr $19.99), so I picked up a pair in golden hickory. My 3rd item is the Dressy Jersey Ruffle-Neck Dress (#17881, $88). It gave me free shipping, so I figured I would try it on at home and just return the next time I hit the mall if it didn't work.

Here is the Polyvore of my order...since clearly I have WAY too much time on my hands:

Results?

Shirt is a yes. Love this. Perfect, simple, keeper. (size M) Think I may have buttoned up 1 too many though, looking at the pic - but seriously - this was open the box, throw on the clothes real quick, take pic and then change back. There was zero styling done other than making sure I wasn't pant-less or anything.

Cafe capris? Well, what do you think? They were a deal at $20 (size 8, btw, like my others). I am wondering about the color - since they are fairly similar to the British khaki ones I have. But I think it would be a great not-quite-khaki to pair with navy, white, cream, gray, black. Any thoughts on golden hickory? What do you pair it with?

On to the dress...I don't know what to think. I mean, I know I don't like it. I feel very thick in this dress. Like tree trunk thick. Is it that the dress is too big? Or is it just a bad design on me? Would love some feedback as I am actually headed to the mall tomorrow, I think. Thank you for your help!

I believe it is a bad design on you, like you said it makes you look thick from the waist down.

Heidi -- you don't say what size you got in the jersey dress but you absolutely have to SIZE DOWN in this dress. It should be fitted on top and then flow straight down from the empire waist. My guess is you would like it (and look better in it) if you dropped down a size. It runs big.

How about pink with golden hickory?

You should try the dress on in a size down. I went down a size than i usually am at for JC and it made a big difference in fit. if that doens't work - I'd return it if you aren't in love with it.

Love those cafe capris - I'm actually going to order some too, as I wear my yellow and blue ones all the time and $19.99 is just too cheap to pass up!! :)

maybe the dress in a lighter color so you can see the details/ be more floaty + pair it with a thicker belt? I like the collar but it didn't look enticing enough for me to try on. I think it would be a great comfy pregnancy dress but I generally avoid empire waist

I love that white shirt...isn't it perfection? And the capris, beautiful and I love the color.

Did you buy that dress in a medium? I bought mine in a small, and I bet you could have as well...just try a small on...go for it, HeidiG. ;)

Thanks for sharing these pics! That pant doesn't look that color AT ALL on the site. I like it a lot better IRL!
The shirt is a GREAT staple to own.

I loved this dress and I like it on you! Maybe try to size down--sounds like it is running big. I liked that color as well--glad to see a picture. Very pretty on you:)

I love the shirt and the color of the capris. I think they would be perfect for your fall weather. I would pair the capris with pink and cream.

I have seen you look a lot better in a dress! The dress does make your bottom half look large, maybe try the next size down like AnneG says.

It's a pretty dress but I think you need to either be in a smaller size or it just isn't the right design for you. I love the color of the cafe capris... I think those and the white shirt are perfect! :)

I like the shirt and the capris - I say keep them! As for the dress, I think it's a hot mess on all that I've seen it on (including me!) except Slastena - it's a very cute maternity dress on her. If you like it, though, try a smaller size and a belt.

I ordered the same dress as a ridealong and received it today. *lol* I hated it. There is no saving it. I think it's for a specific shape. I cannot say what shape but it's not mine. It made me look like a stump. It's awful. You are tall, so I don't know what the issue is with it. It's a nice weight. My positive impressions stop there.

I am not sure I like the cut of this dress on you. Maybe like AnneG said, you can get a smaller size and see if that works, but if you don't love it, you can get something else.

Thank you all for the fab advice!! I will definitely try on the dress in a size down to see if there's any improvement - otherwise, this sucker is going back. (I tried it on in M, maybe the S would work.) Love the belt suggestion, too!

I think I will keep the cafe capris, at least for now, and see whether or not I wear them...but I am sure I probably will.

Thanks again, ladies! I really appreciate it!!

I would totally keep the cafe capri pants! I have so many pairs of them, they are a great staple. The golden color is really pretty too (perfect for fall!) I personally would pair it with navy blue, gray, or even a red/maroon. There are so many possibilities!

Hi Heidi! Ohhhh...I absolutely adore the color on those Cafe Capri's! Perfect J. Crew Pick!!!---I'm going to go over to the website and check those out! You look great!

I think that the problem is that the waist is too high on you. I am high waisted and so that type of stuff usually works for me (and normal waists don't!) but for you something that hits at the natural waist might be better.

After looking at this dress closer. I have determined it is a proportion issue. The distance between the collar hanging down and the empire waist tied belt, is short. Thus it shortens the appearance of your waist--throwing things off. From there I think it is too full from waist down. Do try the small and the add a belt as everyone has suggested and please post pics! BTW-how tall are you?

HeidiG said...

bug pin & zoe moet - you are right about the waist and the proportion. I tried this on in a small, and while it wasn't quite as bad, it was still far from good. It was way too short-waisted for me, and there was this excess fabric in the front middle of the bodice, so it looked like I had an extra yard of fabric between my bust. Weird. But loved it on Dina - she looked great. It just isn't the right dress for me.

I love my brown cafe capris, they look really nice on you! As for the dress I bought it and it is good on me, but I can see how it is not for everyone. For me it is a great seasonless dress, but I do have a short waist so it does work for me.I take it you took it back in the end since the s didn't work?

I love the color of the capris! I have basically every other color of them and now am wishing I had these as well :)

HeidiG said...

Jemma Ruby - I bet this dress is fantastic on you! Yep, took back the M, and didn't purchase the S - but I'm so glad I tried it so that I know to not get it on sale.

M.A. - they're still online...$19.99. :)

The waist is at an odd spot...above your natural waist, but not really empire. It just makes you look like you have a very short torso.

I also have the cafe capris in hickory in my closet and have had trouble finding a color to wear with them. I like to pair them with navy, grey, black, or even white. And of course with my metallic capri sandals!

I tried on this dress and it looked horrible on me. I think it is just a bad design.

Heidi -- just ordered this based on how great they look on you. I am thinking of wearing them w/a creme bib ruffle top & heels. I'll letcha know...

MCC - you are right - bad design...for me. But dinagideon and slastena looked so fab in it. Just not meant for all (or most) of us, I guess.

citygal1 - I'm right there with you on navy, black, gray, white - those were my first thoughts, too!

Petunia - again, join the club! :)

Gigi - bet the golden hickory would be so great with a cream top!
