Winnie Love

The J Crew Winnie coat (#16729, $245)...just pure deliciousness. This yellow - the "bright butternut"? How can you not just love it?! I have been in love with this coat since I tried it on back in August. And just as sure about that fact that I just couldn't quite justify paying full price when I already have a closet full of coats. So I was fully resigned to the fact that the Winnie would probably not be mine...at least not until many months later on a lucky popback.

Then, out of the blue, I got a call from the dear and darling dinagideon, who had just scored Winnies (bbu, natch) for both of us and the fabuloso JC clearance center in Arden, NC. Here is her full post on this little patch of JCA nirvana, as well as her other may-jah scores. So, $90 for the Winnie? Oh yes, please. Isn't she a doll?

Let's talk about the fit of the jacket. I have an 8. Yes, imagine my surprise that there was enough room in the shoulders in the 8. And the sleeves are pleny long - no cold wrists in my future. And for you JCAs with the smaller frames, it does come in petites as well. Oh, and it also comes in navy, and I am a huge navy fan, but this may be the one case where I just go "Navy? Whatever..."

I think the jacket works fine buttoned or open. So far the most I have layered underneath is a merino turtle, but it seemed plenty roomy. And the jacket is so warm, I think my medium weight sweaters will be just fine with it, and keep me toasty (i.e., cambridge cable turtle, cashmere long sleeve tee, etc.)

So what do you wear with Winnies? Well, Minnies, duh... Ok, they actually go with everything. As you can see in the pic above, the beauty of this coat is that it jazzes up anything you put underneath it. And with my usual classic, simple style, it's perfection. I get so many compliments every time I wear it. Walking around Annapolis this past weekend, I had people asking about my coat every time I stopped. Then again, it is a "Navy" color. (Go Navy, Beat Army!)

But for my inaugural Winnie outing, I went with a black bateau neck long sleeve tee from Target (last year) and skinny jeans & ballet flats. And a way cute retail only gray ribbon necklace with gray stone fireballs. dinagideon got the same necklace and I have one waiting for Summerilla when she stops by on Saturday. (she's going to a baby shower at the clubhouse at my pool, how random is that?) Dina got pics of Ugly Betty wearing it - how fun is that?

And I can't end the post without this note - anyone else think "Winnie the Pooh" when they see this coat? Seriously? The color? The name? If you have kids and you didn't make the connection, then you have no soul. Or Disney is coming to haunt you. I kid, I kid.

Now I just need that black bucket hat to go with it...

That coat is the deal of the year!!! Wowzers! It rocks on you. Fabulous. I've been interested in it and hoping it would go on sale. The closest I've come to any price break is the 20% discount. Two questions, please: is this coat warm enough for winters? I've never tried stadium cloth. I'm in the Midwest. Second, I have the yellow piazza cotton cardigan from a few years ago and the citron Lexington jacket. If you've seen these in person can you comment on the Winnie color compared to either of the two items? If it's just a blazer weight jacket then I'll make do with my Lexington and hope for a sale price later. Oh, from your comments, do the Minnies run 1 size too big? Thx!

It's such a cute coat and the color is amazing on you! Great score for you and Dina. :-)
I always stick with boring colors for my coats (black, beige...etc) but I'm tempted to try out new colors this season.

It looks gorgeous on you! The color will brighten up a winter day. It fits you perfectly! I thought it would be short, from the picture on the model, but I guess I just keep forgetting how tall these models must be.

I love the yellow coat on you! I bought this same coat in Navy for my daughter . We paid FP for it back in October in Boston (where she is going to school) I think it was worth it....well-made and a timeless design. You will get years of wear out of this...and you got a great deal!!!!

This jacket was made for you! I saw this IRL on a tourist during leaf peeping season (early Oct.) in Vermont (..and you know she must have paid full price then) It caught my eye, but on you it really pops. You scored!

I must say, I could never wear this coat, I saw someone wearing it in the streets of Manhattan and it was sooooo yellow. But you totally rock it and what a great price (I think that it was better than at the sample sale in NY)

Hi, Sweety! Thanks for the shout-out...I look forward to wearing it, too. Definitely have to at least wear it on the same day, even if we don't see each other...and then a la the dueling banjos, have dueling Winnie posts the same day. :)

BTW, the size 4 yellow is SOLD out. I AM SO GLAD I bought it while in NC. Size 8 and up are still around, but still full-priced. I have a feeling this coat, if it goes on sale, will have limited numbers available at the lower price point.

I still am amazed they had our sizes when I was there...I guess someone likes us, HeidiG.

You look divine, of course. But one question...you didn't have to actually wear it, did you??? It has been very warm here these past few days (well for November, at least).

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Glad you all are enjoying the Winnie! It definitely brightens my day.

Anon@12:23 - Yes, this is a very warm coat, IMO - to the point that I have had to set it aside and not wear on some of the warmer days. Not sure about the yellow piazza cotton cardi - I think the color is similar. Definitely different than the citron - much warmer. And yes, the Minnies do tend to run a size big, esp if you don't have high hips. Hope that helps!

jcmama - I still to so many "boring" colors with my clothes, that it makes it easier to justify a bright coat. :)

Kathy - re: the height - yeah, I would have thought it could be short, too, but I think it has a nice amount of coverage for a shorter coat.

txmom - sorry, didn't mean to be trashing the navy :) - it is very pretty - that one will probably last even longer because it won't get dirty!

Jenni - I have mentally started calling it my Pooh coat. But that could be dangerous as I have a 7 year old and a 9 year old and I don't want them to hear me talking about my "poo" coat. :)

yogagirl - yep, Dina pretty much rocks!

Dina - wow, so glad you got the size 4 when you did! And ok, true confession - I did wear the coat in the morning that day - to the bus stop and walking Lucy. But I actually swapped out to a lighter one when I went out because it got too warm (but I have my ATL short yellow trench which makes a nice lighter sub for the Winnie).

Summerilla - E is over the moon that you are coming. Can't wait for you to meet hubby & Lucy too!!

Debye - ooh, forgot about Paddington Bear...
