Wearing Today, Plus the Esplanade Skirt - a big hmmmmm...

Rain finally stopped but both of E's soccer games today were cancelled as the fields are just too saturated. Since we are out of town for a long weekend next weekend, and then leaving town the following Thursday, she may not get to finish the season. Bummer, but she is totally ready for a break. Why did she have 2 games scheduled today? Because the division she is in (6U, as in 6 & Under) has an odd number of teams so each team has a bye week and a double header week because yeah, 6-year-olds do really well with double headers. At least it's soccer (1 hour games), not baseball (2 hour games).

We got some errands and household chores done today and...exciting news (but not nearly as exciting as Slastena's) - hubby thinks I need a new laptop. Yay! I've been trying to nurse this one for a while, not wanting to spend the buckeroos, but he thinks it's time. We did get new cordless phones today, too, since ours are at least 5 years old, if not more, and I had to alternate between 2 handsets on 2 conference calls on Friday afternoon because the bases aren't charging and the handsets aren't holding charges. I'm not usually excited about electronics, but in this case - or rather, in both of these cases, I really am. Yay!

Wearing today - navy henna tee, gray tank, white jeans, Havaianas sandals, Dina hoops. Still enjoying my tennis-ball-bright bag - loved it with this outfit (see Polyvore). And again, these Havaianas - so fab, everyone needs a pair of these, seriously. If they're good enough for Gisele and Jennifer Aniston...

Polyvore for today:

So let's get to the Esplanade skirt and the tees that arrived. The J Crew Esplanade Skirt, (#14133, $44). Summerilla got the navy one last Saturday night when we had our mini-JCA gathering. It was way cute. And I love easy skirts for the summer. She got an XS, so I decided to try an M, which of course, they didn't have in store, so I decided to order it last week. I actually tried on the M at the Tysons B&M in dark slate, and just didn't love it. But you know how knits are - sometimes they can be totally fab on you in black but not great in any other color. We all know that black can hide a multitude of sins.
I'm still undecided about the black. I think the pics are actually better than the actual IRL look. Here's my issue - see the pic above, where the waistband is wide and on the very thin, totally styled, and photo-shopped model it goes in and out and in and out. Imagine the bulge if you aren't as toned in the tummy area, because that lower line of the waistband is a little tight. And here's the close up of me in the skirt and the way-too-tight Parisian polo that I could barely move my arms in - see all the lovely bulges. Those aren't wrinkles...or muscles.
Larger pic with the Parisian Polo - like the color of the polo, but the whole top was so tight - and I had an L - the shoulders were insane. I don't know if this one is mis-marked or what, because I don't think I've ever had a JC top be this tight on me. Clearly, this one is going back!
Next up - skirt with a perfect fit crewneck in light blade. The tee was $9.99 on sale, and will be cute with jeans or a skirt - and it was so cheap I won't feel bad when I use it to work out in with a tank. (And it gives me something to absorb the shipping since I am definitely returning the polo, and maybe the skirt.)
The good points - knit is soft and not too heavy at all, but not totally flimsy. I love the pockets (see detail pic below - the weathered stone shows the detail best). And it is comfy.
And here is the skirt with a bf tissue tee - which is how I would probably wear it. I like it fine with this tee but here is the thing...Do I like it $44 worth?
I am wondering if this is a case of FFM's term "on sale cute". Or maybe sizing up to an L would mitigate the waistband issue (of course, no L's in black any more, sold out, just my luck - but maybe they will pop back). Does anyone have any wisdom to offer on this skirt and sizing - esp if you happen to be, ahem, a little soft in the middle?

Heidi I ordered this skirt in the stone color. Unfortunately mine had 3 tiny holes in it so I sent it back. And yes, I had the same issue with the waistband-rolls. I originally got an XS but reordered it in Small to see if that helps. Otherwise I love the material, fit and wearability of this style for summer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the looser waist works better under a fitted tee.

Any idea when you'll get the S? (please post back and let me know?) I am wondering if it's worth it to track down. And thanks for making me realize I'm not crazy.

I like the black skirt on you! I also ordered the Parisian Polo and it is tight and does not stretch too much. I just reread your posts on shoes because I am also having a problem with flip flops. My feet hurt! I am going to check out the Havaianas tomorrow. I bought some Born flip flpos, but I think the problem is still the stretching on the bottom of my foot due to no back. Also flats are killers! Thanks for all the info.

Kathy - Good luck with the Havaianas - I love love love them. I got mine at Nordstrom. They are now available on the Nordstrom website (when I got them in Feb, they weren't on yet). Actually, that reminds me, maybe I should try to re-clip for PV b/c the PV clip I have kinda stinks. Gotta go!

CECE - thanks!

I have to say, Heidi, that I love you in the Parisian polo and skirt! I seriously never would have thought there was any bulging--perhaps this is a case where you think it's worse than it is IRL? I know I do that to myself ALL the time. :) You have a great figure, so don't be afraid to show it off!

You really look great here~ as always! I don't think the skirt looks bad on you!?! I tried it on in-store hoping that it would be similar to the jersey swing skirt from last year but it's not! Boo:( I purchased 3 of the jersey swing skirts last year when they were on SUPER sale and I l-o-v-e them all! My sizing is the same as yours but I ended-up getting S's in the swing skirts to help *hold-in* my roll around the middle!!! Also, they are longer (to the knee) than the esplanade skirt too- which I like!

I also did not notice the polo looking tight on you either but I have found that they are tighter on me as well so it is not just you!

If you just aren't feeling that the skirt is perfect for you then I guess my advise would be to return it and hope that you can maybe get it later on sale!?! Or, check ebay for the swing skirt from last year...I think you would really like that one! Good luck! :)

Love the first outfit. I just love the henna tee - someone put one up on JCA's sale last week and I am kicking myself for not snatching it. I just love it on you, its gorgeous!

Now the skirt - I don't think it looks bad on you. But like you always tell me, it really matters how you feel in it, it really is the best advice. If your not comfortable I'd say return it but I think it looks just fine. Definitely return the polo if its that tight. I have had some problems with their polos being way tiny in the past too.

Hope you and the family have a great rest of the weekend!

KatyO - thank you very much for your comments - dfinite food for thought. I know I struggle against my desire for loose clothing and the knowledge that fitted is more flattering. Trust me when I tell you that I could barely lift my arms in the Parisian polo. I'm surprised the sleeves weren't cutting into my upper arms. The shoulders were definitely the worst part, though. The perfect tee was very fitted as well - but totally comfortable, and not constricting. The reason I am bothered by the skirt is that I would be thinking about it when I wear it - and that would totally detract from the comfy factor. I am thinking that sizing up would probably work. Since it's knit, it would just sit a little lower on my hips. Maybe Tysons or Montgomery will have an L next week I can try on.

MMM - good to know about the swing skirt - I will have to check ebay or the JCA exchange. You just posted a PV set, didn't you? - way cute.

Summerilla - you are right. Quote me back to me, whatever. :) I think I may try to check out the regular polo, even thought I like the longer placket of the Parisian. Hopefully I can order an L from the store as an exchange. Or maybe I'll try JC CS tomorrow. (too late to do it now, I don't feel like dealing with it.)

Yes, I did create a PV set w/ it earlier! I also had the *name* of the skirt wrong- it's the "sunwashed cotton swing skirt!"

You looked great today--or yesterday as the case may now be...in the henna tee! And I enjoyed reading your interview questions! smile You got it good (in life) girl!

OMG--Heidi if you return that black skirt, I will just frown. I tell you, I will frown. And I don't frown. Please don't make me frown. It looks SO good on you. With that polo (that looks suspiciously familar--heehee), you could go so many places. You look like you are 25 and ready to rock the world.

I also love your henna tee. I think v-necks are your best neckline...

Please let us know what laptop you are getting, hubby will be buying me one before September!

Oh, duh, I should mention my polo in that color in medium was a bit tight, too. That said, mine stretched out a lot...bear that in mind. That color is fantastic on you!

(Oh, I always size up in their polos...so you did good buying a large.) :)

Heidi, you look fantastic as usual! I hope you're enjoying the weekend now that the sun has finally come out.

I would suggest trying the silk placket polo - it's super flattering and has a bit of extra room all over. I hate when anything is too tight on my arms! And I think the skirt looks cute, but if you're not comfortable in it chances are you will never wear it.

I am also now on the hunt for those Havaianas! Love them! Enjoy your Sunday :)

Hi Heidi! Looking fab as always. I totally know what you mean with knits being hit or miss, I dont have this skirt so I cant comment but I have a question regarding the Havaianas. How are they different from the J.Crew flip flops? I have seen them both and they seem quite similar to my untrained feet- I havent tried either. Can you please make a reply (or even a posting!) on that as they are a bit more pricy than other flip flops. Thannk you in advance!!!

Heidi--I have two of the esplanade skirts. I agree with others who have said that if you feel self-conscious or not totally comfortable in it, it's probably not for you. I also see your point about the wide waistband and what it might reveal; however, that was not an issue with me because I always wear something untucked over the skirt. To me, the positives outweighed that one negative.

Will be interesting to see if sizing up helps you decide. I considered that but didn't do it because I felt there was already enough fabric swirling around and I didn't really want any more. Plus, the size I had was comfortable. Finally, the second one I got was with the 20% off sitewide. :-)

(great henna tee outfit!)

I really like the skirt on you! If I were you, I'd try the larger size. I totally understand what you mean about the waistband, and since this is a skirt that you can pull down to sit on your hips, sizing up would be a good idea. DON'T MAKE DINA FROWN! hehe...I got a good smile out of that, Dina :)

I'd also like some info on the Havianas. I know nothing about them except EVERYONE is wearing/wanting them now. What is so special about them? My brother tells me they are like "the Rainbows of rubber flip-flops."

HeidiG said...

dina - oh no, can't make you frown! First the polo - I literally can barely lift my arms, it's *that* tight in the shoulders. Seriously. I am planning to try a regular polo or, per Kat's suggestion below, the silk placket. Re: the skirt - I want to try the L to compare, and will keep 1, I swear. Go away frown lines!! You know it does come down to how I feel in something and if it makes me feel self-conscious, it isn't right - right? Henna tee - I love vnecks - they draw the eye up and down and not out on my shoulders. I actually LOVE boatnecks too (all b/c of Audrey) but they are usually not the right neckline on me b/c of my wide shoulders.

Kat - thanks for the suggestion on the polo - I had seen those online, but wasn't sure. I will take a closer look.

Jemma Ruby - I just posted on the Havaianas - but if you have any other questions, please let me know!

Ann - thanks for your perspective on the skirt. I am going to try it again before I decided about returning and think I should bring in to the store so I can compare. This evening, there were plenty of L's in the black online, so I think I'm ok.

AppGal - I know, I'm kinda scared of Dina. :) and I just posted on the Havaianas.

Hi, as everybody said the skirt looks good on you but I saw it in the store this Saturday and I don't think it's worth $44. If you are on the fence, I would return it and try to buy it on sale. Just my opinion, hope it helps!

HeidiG said...

Thanks, Ema, I appreciate it. I agree it is a bit light - but I think the wear I would get out of it (if I can get the sizing right) would more than compensate for that. Currently on the hunt for an IRL L. :)

dinagideon said...

Oh, now, don't be scared...only my 6th-graders in trouble should be scared!

Wow...when you explained how tight it was...I have re-thought...no matter how pretty...that is INSANE!!!

Maybe that gorg color comes in some other polo? I hope!!!

HeidiG said...

Dina - thanks, mom, ;) I will be on the hunt for this color in other tops, to be sure.
